A Little Bright Spot in Our Day

Since all of us are still reeling from the reality of Kate's passing, we felt it important to make sure the dogs left behind - especially the two who were closest to her - stay entertained and engaged. To that end, we decided a little retail therapy was in order. Although they didn't get to go to the store and pick out their new toys, both Joey and Shiva appear to be quite pleased with their gifts.

Please check back soon for our tribute to Katy.

And Then There Were Four

Katy's battle with cancer ended at 2:28 this morning, when she passed peacefully away in the serenity of her own home. Loving to the end, this most gentle and unassuming of dogs leaves a truck-sized hole in the hearts of everyone who knew her. Although we may struggle in the coming days to make sense of it all, know that we will never lose sight of the profound impact this "beautiful girl with the sweet little curls" had on our lives.

Thanks to all of you who shared thoughts, love and prayers during this difficult time; all were appreciated. We stand content knowing she was loved to the end and experienced nothing but joy during her all-but-too-short life together with us.

Until the tears subside and we can come up with a more fitting tribute to her, we'll leave you with the words her now-grieving mother was so fond of saying to her every time she left the house: "Later, Kater."

Katy's Bonus Time

We must apologize for our infrequent posting, as we have been spending as much time as possible with Katy while in the midst of hellish spring break pet sitting. Although we faced several moments where we thought we might lose her, Katy has proven to be the most resilient and spirited of dogs, not ready to leave and interested only in checking out on her terms. Fortunately for us, we were able to capture some of those moments on video* which we're now sharing with you. Special tip o' the cap to JB for writing the perfect song for these perfect moments. Enjoy!

* Of course, it includes the expected intrusive cameo by the Red Dog. You won't want to miss it, we promise!

Tiny Little Update

While we continue the "pins-and-needles, needles-and-pins/waiting-for-the-other-shoe-to-drop" deathwatch, Katy continues to serve up a healthy portion of "I don't give a sh*t, I'm having fun here and I'm not going anywhere until I'm darn good and ready."

So far, the two perspectives are at an impasse and we continue to enjoy her effervescent company. For how long, we have no clue. Just know we love her, she knows all of you love her and we are grateful for each and every extra happy moment we share together. Keep praying, and thanks for all the love!

Prayers, Please

The suck that sucks the suck of a thousand sucks is back, and Dr. Brandi thinks it's a matter of hours or days before it's time to help Katy on her way. It feels like yesterday that we found her standing in a snowstorm at the end of a chain, emaciated and miserable yet still willing to risk a tentative wag of her tail in hopes we had a kind word or scrap of food to spare. She was ours in an instant, destined to become a lifelong member of the family. That throwaway dog became the best of friends with the Red Dog and a permanent resident in all our hearts. Now - ten years later - we're reaching the end. Any prayers and love you can spare for her are greatly appreciated.
